A Question

For those of you have been doing the Disappearing 9-Patch...what size squares have you been starting with? I did up a couple of blocks the other day using some 3" strips left over from another project. It seems to me that it will take forever using that size, so I was wondering how you speedy ones were doing them.

I started with 4" squares. Decide on the size you want your quilt to see how big your blocks need to be to come out even. I used 10" strips to make one big block for the back on point.

Using strip piecing this went together really quickly.

I am doing 2 1/2" and it's definitely NOT speedy, but I do like the look. I make 4 of the same fabric so that kind of speeds things up but it's a slow process.

What makes this pattern quick is using planned fabrics so that all the 9 patches are the same. You just sew widths of fabric together, sew the strips, cut, rotate and resew. If you make it scrappy, it will be slow no matter what size squares you start with. Any time you are cutting individual squares it is much slower than using strips.

I haven't pictured this in my head so don't know if it will work, but if you've already made a bunch in the small size, could you alternate rows with squares a bigger size. The finished design wouldn't be exactly the same, but maybe it would be ok.

The person who first posted used 3" squares, but her quilts were only 16 X 20 so they went fast enough even tho scrappy.
