surface design

Do any of you add surface design to your quilts? Ribbons, buttons, etc. I keep wanting to do artsy things, but don't because they seem so impractical. I do remember (?) did one with lots of buttons. Are these for wall hangings, or just because?
Thanks,
Sara

I have added buttons to two wallhangings just to add some "pizzazz". Be forewarned that buttons add weight so the quilt should be well quilted so it won't sag as it hangs on the wall.

It's fun ... kinda like eating potato chips ... hard to stop once you get going. :-)

I've recently seen recycled shirt quilts with buttons added. Either in the center of blocks or around the border. I thought border might be fun but also realize buttons might be snaggers.

I have a book called Fabric Art Workshop by Susan Stein but have not done any quilts. I saw the wallhanging/art this lady made and they are so interesting. She owned a Q shop in St. Paul, Mn. and taught classes. See if you can find the book at your library. Keep on quilting, Phyllis
