Patterns?

Question for Pat in TX and Milli in MA--are patterns available for the strippy cat and star wallhanging you have in your sewing room photos? They look nice and would fit with Holice's plan in life, "No Stash Left Behind!"

This is such fun! Harriet in Kansas

Hi, Harriet, someone at my guild showed us how to do the stars, and I think she learned it at a demo at a quilt show somewhere. First practice drawing the star we all learned to do as kids without lifting our pencil from the paper--just five lines that cross each other. You just pile up as many different fabrics as you want finished blocks and make one cut across the pile, corresponding to one of the lines on the star you drew. Move one side's top piece of fabric to the bottom of the pile on that side, then sew the pieces from the two sides together and press. Then pile them all up again, and do the second cut, move the top piece on one side to the bottom, and sew those pieces together. The seams don't match up very well, since you have no seam allowances in this process, but the stars still are visible. You keep going like this until you have done all five lines of your star. Then measure the blocks and trim them all down to the same size. Points will be lost, you just have to get over the trauma and move on, LOL.

I forgot to say, I sewed 1" strips of white fabric between the two cut pieces of fabric to outline the star, but you don't have to do this step, the stars will just be less distinct.

Oh, thank you, Pat. I think I can handle that! Sort of like stack, cut, & shuffle as opposed to Stack & Whack, I think. I've done a set of crazy quilt squares with similar method & am aware that there isn't a seam allowance, but it worked out fine. And all's well that ends well! No doubt you wondered if it would be worth your time to try & write directions to someone who had to take 4 stabs at a post. I'll try harder to get better. Thank you, Harriet

    Pat,
Did a set of 9 blocks and they worked out very well. Used 1" white strips between sections, and was careful when I made cuts to make them right in the center of the white. Anyway, some points of the white were not pointy, but the colors are back far enough that their points are just fine.
Thank you for the lesson! Harriet
