Learning the ropes here

Celia P. could you e-mail me, please? I have been trying to get in touch with you but the e-mails keep bouncing. My e-mail address hasn't changed. I have been watching the list of names grow and there are so many that I have met - Celia P., Sandi, terter, Jane, Jean, Brenda, Rosey, Pat, Kathy, Brenda, Grace, Mayme, Jill, Marilyn, and more and it is so great to not have to deal with the spam anymore. I started smiling as I was typing in some of the names and thinking of the retreats we have had. Anyway, I'm so glad everyone is finding this site and like Grace (I think) said, in a few weeks the process will seem as easy as the "old" board was.

I'm going to be Pres of our guild next year and this week I realized I should figure out what it is I am supposed to do as "Pres." so I've been looking at past newsletters, programs and all that and my panic attack has passed--at least for the moment. Any new or fun ideas that any of you have done at your guild meetings? I'd like to at least throw a few new ideas on the table when we start planning the speakers, workshops, etc. for next year. Thanks for any tips--Joleen in MN

Joleen, so glad to see you here. I was off line for a short while because my computer fried and I lost all my files. Have a new computer now and will be in touch.

    Hi Joleen,
You didn't say how many members your guild has, but here are some things we do at our guild. Monthly charm swaps. Everyone brings a given number of charms with the current month's theme (by color, holiday or whatever) and that committee chairperson divides them all into piles for the participants to pick up on their way out. We also do a fq drawing. Your name goes into the drawing for every fq you put in the pile. We usually have enough for 2 or 3 people to take home a stack of fqs. It is not required, but fun for the participans and it feeds itself. Because if you don't like some you get, you can put them back in for another month. We always have a vendor who provides door prizes. You get 5 door prize tickets for a dollar (the money goes into the rental fee of where we meet). We have 2 different kind of "auction" fund raisers during the year. At one we bring our no longer wanted books, patterns, tools, other items and each is given a number and a brown bag. You get 10 free tickets and 10 more for a dollar. You put your (labeled w/name) tickets in the bags of the items you are interested in. If your name is drawn out, you pay the price on the item. The other is a silent auction intended to be gift items around the holidays. We have potlucks for both of these meetings as opposed to the snacks and drinks served at regular meetings. We always have a program--sometimes regional quilters, appraisers, teachers; sometimes featuring members of our own guild who show their quilts and tell their stories.

    Hope this helps!!

One year in our guild in MI, we had a monthly block drawing--everyone made a certain block, like a churn dash, and put their name in the hat (they could make more than one and put their name in as many times as the number of blocks they brought), then one of the names would win the blocks. If there were a huge number, they would divide them in two batches and draw two names.

In March, our guild here is having a quilter's flea market--we can all bring things we don't need or no longer love, and sell them to folks who do want them.

    Hi Joleen,
My advice for your presidency is deligate, deligate, deligate!
Don't micro-manage, keep up with what your chairpeople are doing, but let them do their thing.
Encourage newbies to take on board positions or committee heads. New
    helpers add a new perspective.
Be in control of meeting operations, especially board meetings where things can break down into chit chat so quickly.
Our guild sounds much like Judy in ar's in terms of activities.
We have Saturday Workshops once a year where we rely on guild members to do half day classes. a sharing time, great way to learn the talents of our own members.
Hope it's a fun experience for you! Jill
