new CPSIA law

Judy in Ohio --- thanks for posting the info here. I've been following it for a while on garment-sewing forums, and it is indeed a fine mess our folks in Washisngton DC, have created. Here is an garment industry-related forum that has been following it with great interest: (just copy & paste into your browser) http://www.fashion-incubator.com/phpbb/viewforum.php?f=32&sid=97d5ceb9b6ce34cae22444d715a71f64

I alerted the Charity committee of my quilt guild already, because we make Ronald McDonald House quilts, gave them the links, and they'll follow up on what we can and cannot do.

This law will particularly hurt the independent home/cottage industry sewists that make baby & childrens clothes, toys, quilts to sell. This includes those who sell through fancy heirloom shops as well as craft fairs. They have neither the funds nor the equipment to test every button, piece of fabric, paint, etc.

Doris, my understanding that the law, as currently written, will destroy the home sewing industry that makes children's clothing. The various "cottage industries" (as they have been known for decades) that make handcrafted children's toys, educational games and garments are more or less doomed by the strict testing requirements spelled out in this act of Congress. It is as if Congress threw out the baby with the bathwater ....

Judy - you're exactly right. This is what I've been reading about, too.
