Sleeve question

I just finished my quilt for a show. I have the sleeve stitched across the top side. My question is, do I sew the bottom stretched flat from the top or do I pull a quarter inch back toward me and sew it (hope that makes sense, it's hard to describe stuff). I have always pulled the quarter inch back, but this is going to a fairly large show and I don't want to mess up. Thanks.

Lavinia, I always pull back toward the top and tack with a little bit of "give" in the sleeve because often the hanging apparatus at a show is round (like PVC pipe) and when you put a round rod through the sleeve, if it's flat/taut, you will get distortion on the front. I think the main consideration is that you don't put too much give in it so that anything shows at the top when the weight pulls it down--I've seen stipulations in show rules that say "attach sleeve so that it is not visible from the front." (BTW, are you still at your old e-mail? We're still down in Hixson. Would love to chat off-board again.)

I think Beth is describing the way I do it. Think of it as taking a quarter inch tuck on the side away from the quilt after it is attached at the top. Then attatch the lower edge thus leaving the give in the outer side of the sleeve. I guess that's redendant to Beth's.

I always leave the give at the back also. 1/4" usually. It hangs better that way! Best wishes on the show!

My guild show instructions say to leave 1/2" of slack on the back. Does your show have any particular guidelines?

OK. All they ask for is a four inch sleeve so I added the seam allowance and did that. Then they require 95 inches from the floor for the top of the sleeve. So I measured that, pinned and stitched the top of the sleeve and the "sides" of the sleeve so they can't stick the rod behind the sleeve. Now I am going to stitch the bottom. At this point the sleeve is exactly four inches -- I was going to pull it back about 1/4 inch before stitching so there would be a little give, if you will. If I need to make it bigger yet, will have to cut another one and take all this stitching out -- it is 101 inches wide. Thanks for input. Lavinia
