Baby Boy
Kathi, I am the one who is expecting a new grandson in June. Thanks for remembering! I tried to comment on your post, but for some reason it wouldn't take my password. I would appreciate any ideas for boy quilts. We have 2 granddaughters and I made quilts for each of them, plus an I Spy and a twin size quilt for the older one. But I would like this one to be different than the others. I am sure there are lots of good ideas out there. Also, now that pictures can be posted, it's like Show and Tell at quilt guild every day! I would love to see more boy themed quilts.

Laurel, I let the fabric do the work for me. If the baby boy's daddy is a fisherman or a football fan or a man who loves his John Deere you can find fabric that represents these "manly" interests and make a boy sized quilt that will appeal to both father and son.
Once you find an appropriate fabric (for example, realistic trout or cartoon-y fish) you could make an Attic Windows pattern and call it "Fish in the Attic". There are so many theme fabrics out there .... Nascar, horses, fire trucks, Sponge Bob, etc. etc. etc. that you really can have a grand time and make too many quilts before the child arrives. LOL

Laurel, I, too, recommend attic windows or, more simple, just large centers with theme fabric and colorful framing strips. Try moseying around a quilt shop or two checking out fabrics until something grabs you. I once spied some jungle animal fabric at Wal-Mart where I wouldn't ordinarily buy fabric, and it jumped out at me. My twin grandsons were approaching their 7th birthday so I picked it up with coordinating fabric. We'd just had an attic windows class at my guild so that's the way I went. It was just a wall hanging but the boys were thrilled. The next time I visited (they live 900 miles from me) they hit me at the door to escort me to their shared room to show me their "favorite" animals. Now that they are 14 years old I think it's been sacrificed for hockey posters but I'm pleased that it made them so happy.
I posted it way back then in '98 on the "Design Wall" part of the WWQP and I think it's still there. Unfortunately that feature of the BB wasn't kept up after the one that posted shortly thereafter. Check it out. For a newborn maybe clowns or something equally colorful would be more appropriate.

Kathi - I made a "bug jar" quilt for my granson back in 2000 when they were quite the rage. I included other fabrics besides bugs - I had some jelly beans and some that looked like money. You can probably use the Google Images and see lots of ideas for making one of these. I didn't use a pattern - just kind of made it up as I went along. Used wood-look fabric for the shelves and a dark blue for the background. Good luck! NancyH
