serger sewing question

July 8, 2008

It's been awhile since I've posted, I'm surprised I was able to sign in so easily.

My question is more a sewing question. I dread changing the thread on my serger, although I try to keep it threaded with a neutral gray, but sometimes even that doesn't work. For anyone out there who knows, would it be ok to just keep it threaded with nylon/invisible thread for general serging?

Thanks for any input.

Don't know what kind of serger you are using, but my old Babylock did just fine with the thread left in it. The only way I could change thread and not get all mixed up was to knot the new thread onto the old and run it through until it got to the needle and then cut it so the new thread could go through the needle. Not too sure about the nylon, as I never used it in the serger.

Ditto what Kathi says. The only nylon I ever used was a soft stretchy nylon. Since sergers are somewhat about stretch I wonder if the nylon we use in quilting would be appropriate. I also want to mention a tip I learned in a serger class many years ago that you always must thread the right needle first when using two needles with the serger.

Thanks to Kathi in Idaho and Laura in IA. I do change my thread like you said, Kathi, I was taught by the person who services my serger to set all the settings to zero then knot the new thread to the old, pull it through, then cut the knot to thread the needles. Works really well. Thanks for the tip on threading the right needle first.

I guess the only way I'll find out is to try the clear nylon thread. Have you noticed that some ready made garments and other things are serged with clear nylon?

    Thanks again.
